Brief getaway but plagued with a smokers dilemma.

This weekend was interesting. I spent a whole weekend with the in-laws. That in itself should say it all. I took a three hour walk with the dog to relax after breakfast to get away.

The walk and the bike ride I took with my daughter was the best part of the weekend. While I was walking the flying grasshoppers were taking off around me. Both the dog and I enjoyed it. I would have kept walking but the dog needed water and I needed to get back for the “feast” which everyone was going to have. I don’t really eat much in the afternoon so my part of the feast was some scallops and some fruit salad.

I got my face burned a slight bit so presently it is getting pretty dark. My face, the upper part of my body, and my legs are getting pleasantly bronzed from all the outside activities this year.

The worse part was someone who looked like they were ready to leave this world. Without going into detail on all the physical conditions I wanted to concentrate on the one that plagued me all weekend.

This was the person’s routine. They would hobble out of the house breathing hard, “Wheeeeezzzzeee, fhooooooooo…” Hardly able to take a full breath. They needed to take breaks while walking in order to get too a chair to sit down.

After finally setting down into the chair they started hacking over and over again. Since they already did not have any air they would just sit and hack for about 10 minutes until finally something would come up. At that point they would slightly bend over and spit out what they “hacked up”.

Get this! They next step was to go into their pocket and pull out a cigarette, light it, and smoke for the duration of the cigarette being lit.

After the above was finished the process would start all over again with the hacking for about 10 minutes.

So why didn’t this person stop smoking so that they could breath a little better and possibly last a little longer? Their logic was that they did not care if it was bad for them. It was the only thing that they enjoyed and that they could still do.

After watching this I can now sympathize with the person on the commercial on TV who describes his wife dying from smoking and the last thing she had wanted was a cigarette. I am thankful that I quit when I did even if every day since then has been a challenge to not start again. It gets duller with time but never goes away.

Now where is the whole in the person’s logic above?

*shakes his head and walks away in confusion*

Now who ever said there was anything logical about addiction?

And just because you fought a battle with the addiction and won, doesn't mean everyone else can do it, meaning not everyone else has the strength of will to just put them down because health is more important.

And... my mother quit smoking five years ago, and still wheezes like crazy, after smoking almost all of her life. Quit at a late stage doesn't necessarily mean your breathing or health will improve. There really is a line somewhere that if you cross it, its pointless to stop.

*jumps off her soapbox*

Just playing devil's advocate... I respect that you quit, Gary, and as for those of us still smoking... I say we are works in progress, we just haven't finished quitting yet.

Love you much, hope to talk soon!

Lisa

Oh, I figured the same when I was reading it although you did have me going there for a bit.

I watched on person die of smoking and he lasted many years albeit on oxygen the whole time. Never got any better. I figured that the years I had smoked will catch up to me one day. At least I had a lesser number of colds after I quit.

I would never try to make anyone stop smoking but I also reserve the right to tell you every day that you should not be doing it.

Love back at you lady!
